Terms of service

Last updated 9 October 2026

These are the terms linked from the app's paywall. By using Checkly you agree to them.

1. Who you are agreeing with

Checkly is made by Nave, trading as Checkly, Jan Nautahof 46, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. KVK 80502474, VAT NL003447574B73. The one address for everything — support, privacy requests, legal notices — is info@get-checkly.com.

2. What Checkly does

Checkly reads the barcode on a makeup, skincare, hair or body product, looks it up in Open Beauty Facts, Open Food Facts and the products Checkly users have added, and compares the ingredient list with the preferences you entered. It answers with a score, a band, a written reason and an explanation of every ingredient it recognises.

Where the barcode is in no database, or where you would rather not scan one, Checkly can read the ingredient list itself — through the camera or from a photo or screenshot — and score from that. A reading from the pack is marked as such, is capped below the top band, and lists what was recognised, because Checkly can only count what it read.

Checkly scores cosmetics only. A barcode that turns out to be food, pet food or a household product is identified and shown, and not scored.

The shelf counts down each product's period after opening from the date you enter and the period on the pack or, where the database has none, a typical period for that kind of product. The reminders are a convenience: the symbol on your pack, the product's condition and your own judgement come first.

3. What Checkly is for

Checkly is a consumer information tool. Its intended purpose is to present publicly available product data and to compare it with preferences the user has entered. It is not intended to diagnose, prevent, monitor, predict, prognose, treat or alleviate any disease, injury or disability, and it is not a medical device under Regulation (EU) 2017/745. It does not replace reading the product packaging or advice from a doctor, pharmacist or dietitian.

4. Not medical advice

Checkly is an information tool. It does not diagnose, treat, monitor or prevent any condition, and it is not a medical device. Talk to a doctor, pharmacist or registered dietitian about allergies, intolerances, medication and any change to your diet or skincare. Product data comes from community-edited databases and can be incomplete or out of date — always read the packaging.

5. Access

Checkly is a subscription app. The introduction and the worked examples are free; scanning, search, results, the shelf and history require an active Checkly Premium subscription. An introductory free period, of the length shown on the paywall, is available to customers who have not used it before; if you do not cancel before it ends, the subscription renews automatically at the price shown on the paywall. Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple; manage or cancel them in your App Store account settings.

6. Prices and renewals

Every price, trial length and saving shown in the app comes from the App Store at the moment you see it, in your own currency. Payment is taken by Apple when the trial ends or the subscription renews. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not refund the period you are in. Refunds are Apple's to give.

Checkly Premium is offered as a monthly and an annual auto-renewing subscription. Payment is charged to your Apple ID account. A subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, including a free trial, and your account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before that period ends. Any unused part of a free trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription. Manage or cancel your subscription in your App Store account settings (Settings › your name › Subscriptions); deleting the app does not cancel it. Refund requests go to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

In some countries a free trial comes with a voucher from a partner, shown on the paywall before you start. It is yours once the trial starts, also if you then cancel. The voucher is the partner's: you use it in their shop, under their terms, while their stock lasts and until they end the offer. Checkly does not sell, deliver or guarantee the partner's product, and the partnership has no effect on any score.

7. Your side of it

You must be at least 16 to use Checkly.

The product data comes from community-edited databases and from other Checkly users, and can be incomplete, out of date or simply wrong, and packaging changes faster than any database. A camera reading can miss or misread a word. Always read the pack, and treat a Checkly score as one input rather than as the answer — particularly where a reaction, an allergy or a medical condition is involved.

Use Checkly for your own personal use. Do not attempt to resell, scrape or redistribute the app or the data it shows, and do not use it in a way that breaks the law.

8. Products you add

When a product is in no database you can add it: its barcode and the ingredient list read from its pack. It is kept on your device and shared: shown to anyone who scans the same barcode, as added by a Checkly user.

By adding a product you confirm that what you add was read from that product, and that it contains nothing personal, offensive or unlawful. You give Checkly a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to store it, show it to other users and keep it available for as long as it is useful, until you remove it. Checkly may correct, hide or remove any shared product, and may stop a device that misuses the feature from adding anything. If something shared looks wrong or offensive, use "Report a problem" on the product; reports are read within 24 hours.

9. Where the data comes from

Product data and photographs come from Open Beauty Facts and Open Food Facts. The databases are licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0, their contents under the Database Contents License (DbCL) v1.0, and product photographs under CC BY-SA 3.0. Products added by Checkly users are shown as such. The ingredient glossary is built from the Open Beauty Facts ingredient taxonomy and the European Commission's CosIng database. The full notice is in the app, in Profile › Open data licences.

9a. Better swaps

Better swaps are products whose ingredient lists Checkly checked against the brand's own and a second source; brands change formulas, so the pack in your hand decides. Checkly doesn't sell them.

9b. Mira, Checkly's beauty assistant

Mira's goal guides and its answers to your own questions are general information about makeup, not medical advice. Answers to free questions may be written by an AI model and are marked "AI"; they can be wrong or incomplete, so check anything that matters to you, and ask a doctor or pharmacist about your skin or your health. Products are suggested by Checkly's score alone, never by a model, a brand or a store.

9c. Look previews

Looks are previews made on your phone: an approximation of how a look might turn out, not a promise of how a product will look on you. Light, screens and skin all change colour, so check a shade in person before you rely on it. Previews are marked "Checkly preview", and the model shown before you add a photo is AI-generated.

10. Liability

Checkly is provided as it is. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited under Dutch or EU consumer law. Beyond that, Checkly is not liable for decisions taken on the basis of a score or a reminder, for errors in the underlying databases, in a product another user added or in a camera reading, or for the app being unavailable.

11. Changes, law and contact

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them and the new version ships in an app update. Dutch law applies, and your rights as a consumer in your own country are unaffected. Questions go to info@get-checkly.com.

12. Apple

These terms are between you and Nave, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content and has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation.
